4-5-64 St. Petersburg, Fla: Mets first-baseman, Tim Harkness, argues with umpire Lee Weyer in second inning of today's (4-5) Mets-Cardinals game. Harkness argued that a throw did not pull him off bag. Weyer won the argument and threw Harkness out of the game. The Cardinals won 2-1.

(FX6) SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 14 --  FREE SPEECH -- Manager Herman Franks of the Giants, edgy over a two-game losing streak, argues with plate umpire Lee Weyer over an eighth inning call, top photo, moments before being tossed from the game. That action brought instant response from a loyal San Francisco fan positioned near the Giants' dugout, who did a little oratory on his own -- with gestures, The Giants lost again to Philadelphia, 4-2.

The dispute developed when giants Wille McCovey struck out swinging, Braves catcher, Bob Didier, dropped the ball but tagged McCovey. McCovey and King pleaded interference by Didier. The Braves beat the Giants 4-1 to sweep a three game set.

Bristol Penalty Reduced After Hearing

ATLANTA-Braves' Manager Dave Bristol, insisting certain umpires' vendettas against him and his team will continue, angrily accepted penalties of a two-day suspension and $300 fine June 22 for allegedly using abusive language and bumping umpire Lee Weyer in a May 31 incident at Cincinnati.

National League President Chub Feeney made the ruilng a day after listening to Bristol's appeal and viewing videotapes of the incident along with the Braves' manager and player Darrel Chaney at the N.L. office in New York.

Bristol was advised of the decision via a hand-delivered letter. Coach Vern Benson managed the team in Bristol's absence.

FEENEY'S LETTER ALSO warned Bristol that a recurrence of what happened at Cincinnati would bring further consequences after the National League president had lessened the original fine of $500 and five days' suspension. That, then, places the Braves' skipper on probation for the remainder of the season.

He hinted he might appeal to a higher court, the commissioner's office, but said, “I'm relieved it's not five days, but not pleased that it's two. I want to be with the club. This really hurts, especially at this particular time.

“I’ll serve it, but I won't like it."

The controversial play which brought about the fine and suspension involved Bristol and Weyer following a decision by the umpire on a tag play at second base. The Braves argued that shortstop Jerry Royster tagged out sliding Ken Griffey, who, they contend, never reached the bag. They also said that Weyer was out of position on the play.

FEENEY'S LETTER SAID that Bristol admitted using abusive language.

"I did," said the manager.

The letter added that Bristol bumped Weyer'at least three times.

"When we were there, watching the tape, he could find only one," said Bristol. "That was the time my cap came off. He's just taking the umpire's words. That's a one-way street and as long as those four are in the league, they'll be after me."

Remaining umpires on the team are Ed Montague, with whom Bristol had a run-in last season, Paul Runge and An Williams.

Richie Phillips, legal council for the umpires, talks with umpires Lee Weyer & Harry Wendelstedt before they went into closed meeting. Trying to win higher salaries, the 52 major league umpires have been on strike during the exhibition season.

07/04/1979 – Garry Templeton is safe at 3rd as Steve Ontiveros argues with umpire Lee Weyer that he made the tag. It was the first inning and the first batter... Templeton singled to left and went to 3rd when Dave Kingman let the ball get past him for a 2 base error.

Cardinal manager Whitney Herzog protests to 1st base umpire Lee Weyer after Tommy Herr #28 was called out in a rundown in the 6th inning of game 7. #14 for Twins is Kent Hrbek, #7 for Cardinals is 1st base coach Rich Hacker.

HERR, OUT A T FIRST?

The sixth inning of Game #7 produced a very important and controversial play. With the score tied at 2-2 and one out in the Cardinals' half of the sixth, Tom Herr led off first base. Frank Viola threw to first baseman Kent Hrbek and got Herr in a rundown. Hrbek tossed to Lombardozzi, who ran Herr back towards first base. On this way back to first base, Herr appeared to run into Hrbek which, if interference, would allow him to go to second base safely. However, the first base umpire Lee Weyer called Herr out when Lombardozzi tossed to Viola covering first base. The Cardinals argued that Viola's tag appeared to be late.

The umpire's call enraged Herr and first base coach, Rich Hacker. There is no telling what would have happened if the umpire had made the opposite call in this case. Maybe a clutch-single by Lindeman or Willie McGee would have knocked Herr in, or maybe he would have been left stranded on the bases. In any case, the Twins went on to win Game #7 and the 1987 World Series.

JACKSON, S.C., OCT. 23 (1959) --  YOUNGEST UMP -- Twentythree year old Lee Howard Weyer is squatting in a fox-hole now but by next spring he'll be crouching behind homeplate in the National League calling balls and strikes. And when he does he'll be the youngest umpire in major league history. Weyer is taki9ng a basic training course at this arma base. Weyer has umpired in the MidWest league and the Southern Assn.

Became regular member of N.L. umpire staff in April, 1962. Previously umpired in Midwest League, Southern Association and International League. In the off-season Lee does commercials für special artists. Hobbies include all sports and traveling.
 

LEE WEYER 23

1936–1988

Lee Weyer, a National League Umpire since 1962, died 1988 of a heart attack on July 4th while at the home of close friend, and National League Umpire Eddie Montague. Lee as very easy going and loved life. Lee was a member of the Screen Actors Guild and felt that he was an entertainer and the whole world was his stage. One of his favorite sayings was "you gotta have a little fun" and he did, living life to its fullest.

In 1961, Lee worked his first National League game, becoming a regular member of the League in 1962.

During his career, he worked four World Series, five Championship Series and four All-Star games.

Lee was to be married to his fiancee Linda Hickey on October 16, 1988.

Official National League baseball which has been signed and notated by the late umpire Lee Weyer. In a 1987 Sports Illustrated poll of NL catchers, Weyer was rated the best at calling balls and strikes. The 6 '6" umpire was behind the plate on September 11, 1985, in Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium when Pete Rose collected his 4,192nd hit to break Ty Cobb's career record, and was the third base umpire in the April 8, 1974 game in which Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record of 714 career home runs. Weyer also did national television commercials for Miller Beer and Coca Cola. Weyer died 1988 at 51 of a heart attack after working the Cubs 3-2 win over San Francisco.

Authentically autographed 3x5 index card of former major league umpire LEE WEYER (d. 1988). Weyer debuted as an umpire in 1962. This was culled from a very large inventory of genuine baseball autographs, composed almost entirely of various collections assembled first-hand through the mail by veteran autograph collectors.
